I lost my little Strudel on 1/20/23. The poor baby had a collapsed lung due to, we think, a tumor in her chest, and she couldn’t breath and the vet didn’t think she could be saved. Euthanasia was recommended. Both myself and her partner, Waffles, are heartbroken.
Strudel came to live with us on March 3rd, 2018. I picked her up from the shelter after Waffles’ previous partner, Sparkplug, died on 2/20/2018. Waffles was in deep despair, and only by bonding him with Strudel did he snap out of it.
She was a darling bunny. She was rescued from a hoarding/abusive situation in August of 2016, and stayed in the shelter for a year and a half before we adopted her. Why she lingered so long there I do not know; she was a beautiful bunny. She was shy and wary of people, but loving and silly once she trusted you. She was filled with personality, as was especially mischievous when she thought no one was watching!
My first introduction to her mischief was shortly after we brought her home. I was watching TV, listening to the audio on headphones, when suddenly the sound cut out. Wondering what happened, I looked down from the couch and saw my new house member sitting there looking at me with the headphone cable, chewed to bits, by her feet. That must have been fun for a bunny! I made sure my headphone cable was above ground after that!
She was a handful, but so delightful and spunky and fun once I gained her trust (which took a long time because of her abusive past). She loved to bump my head with her nose and pull the glasses off of my face. She gladdened my heart daily with her sweet innocence. And boy could she “binky”! She jumped higher than any other bunny I’ve ever seen. I sometimes called her the “flying bunny”.
Poor Strudel developed splay leg in April of 2021, so both of her front legs did not work well. But, she was a determined bunny and was able to get around well despite her disability. She was patient when I gave her meds and some physical therapy, and was always a cheerful soul even though she had so many problems.
We think Strudel was about 7.5 years old when she left us, and she left way too soon and way too suddenly. She had adjusted to her disability well and was a happy rabbit and all seemed to be going well. The tumor must have grown quickly because she showed no signs a year or so before that when she had x-rays for her legs. It was such a terrible surprise. We looked forward to many more years of being together. Sadly, it was not to be. Rest in peace, beautiful bunny.
